What We Do

The Hamilton Dancesport Club is responsible for organising three events during the dance year, and it also holds an Annual General Meeting.

The Annual General Meeting

The AGM is held in May each year and gives an opportunity for all members to hear the committe’s report on the past year. We value the feedback, ideas and suggestions from members on what they enjoy, what they would like more of and what they would like changed, as we firm up our plans for the coming year.  The meeting is usually held at a central location in Hamilton/Frankton and often involves a lunch or morning tea.

The Annual Ball

Our ball provides an opportunity for everyone to:

  • Dress up formally and enjoy Ballroom, New Vogue and Latin dancing.  This is the event to wear your best dress, black tie and enjoy fantastic music in the major dance social event of the year.
  • Mix and mingle with other dancers, make new friends, plan a table with old friends, swap notes about your dancing.
  • Enjoy a few drinks (BYO) and either nibbles or a shared supper

The Annual Dance Competition

Our annual dance competition, (known as the Hamilton Festival of Dance) caters for dancers and spectators in a competitive setting. Starting at 1pm and running into the evening, this event is not to be missed, and includes:

  • A chance for social dancers to try out competitive dancing in either partner excluded preliminary events or pro-am events.  It is a friendly competition and perfect for beginners, children and all levels of social dancers.
  • A Hamilton based forum for any registered dancers to compete, move up the grades, and prepare for National events.  Competitors regularly travel from other regional centres to attend this event.
  • A special section for children and young people to encourage their entry and development in the sport
  • A wonderful opportunity for spectators to come and enjoy watching Ballroom, Latin and New Vogue dancing for any part or all of the day.

We enjoy the participation of dance studios across the North island, and present a ‘Dance for our Studio Trophy’ for the studio earning the most points in selected events. We also offer travel grants for those entering and winning events in each of Adults, Masters 1 and Masters 2 levels.

Our competition is run under NZRDI guidelines and we appreciate the support we receive from NZRDI who supply adjudicators, NZ Scrutineers who collect and collate all results, and also from Footwork Dancesport Studio, Hamilton, who provide the music.

Entry and live programme will be available through Dancesportlive.net

The Annual Social Dance

Our dance social is a more informal affair than the Ball and offers:

  • An range of Ballroom, Latin and New Vogue dances along with a mix of fun social and progressive dances such as the Monte Carlo, Progressive Cha, Mo Jive and a few easy Line Dances.
  • A shared supper, where everyone brings a small plate of their favourite food and BYO drinks.
  • People can dress more informally and enjoy the relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

This is a great opportunity for:

  • People newer to dancing to try out their skills in a safe environment.
  • No need for a full length dress or ballgown, special dance shoes or a suit.  This is more a ‘come as you are’ social.
  • Those without partners to get together and come as a group.
  • Seasoned dancers who simply love to dance and enjoy a night out meeting others.
